An incredible 7000 shows…and counting!

by mike_richards, Thursday, November 05, 2009

Its kinda funny to say out load: 7000 episodes. How is that even possible?

The answer, of course, is a perfect format from the legendary creator of “The Price Is Right”, Mark Goodson. From the “Come On Downs” to the original conceit of pricing everyday items for spectacular prizes, “Price”, to me, is perfect.

We had a ton of fun planning the 7000th episode! In the first half of the show, you’ll see us use 7000 mile trips and change Lucky Seven to Lucky 7000.

In the second half of the show, we picked the first 3 pricing games played on the first Price Is Right show on September 4, 1972. They are Any Number, Bonus Game, Double Prices-These are perfect pricing games that are as relevant in 2009 as they were on 1972.

For the showcases, we used the prizes from the first showcases and updated them for 2009. We even used footage from the original show!

Whether you are a life long “Price” fan or new to the show, we know you’ll love our look back on an incredible 7000 shows…and counting!

.....as long as the people are willing to stand and sit In line, hoping to be picked and maybe win a prize. The Price Is Right will roll on.

This is the worst special I've ever seen. I didn't see a single car given away. It really ticked me off about those contestants screwing up on their chance of winning a car. What happened to the rhythm or the spirit of the game? Sorry guys, but I don't see or feel any presence at all when compared to a few contestants who won big like Bridgette who won a Hyundai Elantra on Ten Chances, she only used five chances (two per small item, one for the car). That was the rhythm I want to see, hear, and feel.

The format of the show has not changed since 1972 (other than the expansion to one hour and the addition of the big wheel). So what exactly are you accusing Mike of "ruining", EdwardCook?

Hey Mike - if Mr. Goodson's format was so perfect, why are you always talking about making changes? You're are ruining what WAS perfect.

Just a postscript... I remember seeing an interview with Sammy Davis Jr. about 20 years ago. He was asked what was his favorite television show. He answered "The Price Is Right". He was totally sincere. If a legendary wealthy show business legend such as he understood the brilliance of this show, then so it be. Price is the perfect format indeed.

Mike, you couldn't have explained it better. It's THE PERFECT FORMAT. Period. THAT is the reason The Price Is Right will ALWAYS be on television for as long as broadcast television survives. The host and the staff are changeable. The format is not. The appeal of the show is seeing (and living vicariously through) everyday people as they are suddenly and instantly thrust into the limelight of national television. Not to mention that they can also win free stuff! I believe if the staff were to poll the contestants one year AFTER their appearance, the vast majority would say the thrill of it all was simply hearing their name called and running down that isle to contestant's row. I'm guessing that winning thousands of dollars worth of prizes, or winning nothing at all, would be a secondary experience for most of the contestants. I'm certain everybody who works at the show knows this, and would probably reply by saying "no s... sherlock"! I just wanted to post this thougt because every non-game show fan interviewer I've ever seen always asks something stupid like "why is this show so successful". This reply is for them!
