Happy New Year From TPIR Producer Adam Sandler!

Happy New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed today's special New Year's Eve show, featuring some of the best prizes of 2009! We loved all your suggestions, as voted by you here on the site, and many of them were favorites of the cast and crew too. We had a lot of fun putting that show together, starting when we all got together and went around the room making a list of our favorites--there were so many it took up a whole page on my pad of legal paper!

Not that you asked, but my favorite prize in the show was the "Man Wall." Whoever designed that is a genius! I'm not much of a car-guy, but the 1969 Corvette Stingray was up there on my list as well. In fact, the entire crew was crazy for it from the moment it came down the hall and rolled into the studio.

Thanks to all of you who sent in your favorite prizes to the website--we're always looking for more ways to interact with you, and hope to have even more in the coming year. Have a fun and safe New Years Eve, thanks for watching in 2009, and we'll see you in 2010!

Holiday Gift Ideas from “The Price Is Right”

by kathy_greco, Tuesday, December 15, 2009

There are so many gift ideas you can get from watching our show. I’m not talking about a new car or a trip around the world. I mean gifts that fit a budget.

Take a look at our games with the small pricing items. We have an array of prizes for the tech lover, the cook or the gadget collector, mostly under $50.00 (web cam, digital golf scorer, electronic dictionary, roasting pans, blenders, Panini press), many under $25.00 (computer speakers, CD player, yoga mat, salad chopper, toasters, juicers, “Star Wars” Jr laptop, hand-held games) and some under $15.00 (Robot tissue holder, Guitar Hero game/keychain, “Star Wars" Pez dispensers, shower radio, body lotions, throw blankets, etc.)

If you’re looking for something special for that special someone, we have designer bags, colorful scarves, beautiful jewelry and watches. For that man in your life, there are laptops, tools, Playstation 3’s, Wii’s, watches and satellite radios.

And don’t forget Priceisright.com. The shop there carries t-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, baseball caps and much more all with “The Price Is Right” logo on them.

Now, you may say, “These are great ideas, but I just don’t have the money.” Hey, I get that. We are all cutting back this year. But, I have another gift idea and it’s FREE!

Just order tickets and come see “The Price Is Right” in person. It’s a great gift to give someone and the memories of their visit will last forever. Who knows, maybe they will even win a “new car”. Wrap them up in red and yellow and make the gift tag in the shape of a “Price” name tag. Your loved one will love it and really appreciate your creativity.

Have a wonderful Holiday season.

Kathy

Behind the scenes: A week in the life of a TPIR producer

by kathy_greco, Monday, December 07, 2009

Hi everyone,

My name is Kathy Greco and I am one of the producers of "The Price is Right." For those of you that have watched the show for many years, you may know me as "Fingers."

I have worked with every host--from the incomparable Bob Barker to Dennis James, Tom Kennedy and Doug Davidson; to our current host, the fun and fun-loving Drew Carey. I've handed scripts to every announcer and helped every model that has ever graced our stage.

Whenever I am introduced to someone and they find out what I do, there are always a million questions: "What's it like to work on the show?" "What do you do?" "What's Drew Carey like?" The questions just fly. So, what I thought I would do here is tell you what it is really like to work on "The Price is Right."

Working here is a little surreal. To think that I help put on the longest-running game show in television history is just weird. It's my job and it's something I love to do--and how very lucky am I!

My main job is "prizes." I schedule most of the prizes on the show, and try to make them as varied and fun as possible. I know not every prize is going to be loved by everyone, but we try to have something for everyone. If you don't like this one bid, I bet you're going to love the next one!

I am on stage during the tapings of the shows. I make sure the prize copy is correct, that the prices of the prizes are correct, and I receive the contestants after they have finished playing their games. The only thing I can't seem to prevent is me getting in a camera shot when I'm not supposed to be there!

I also explain the rules on the Big Wheel to the contestants, and the showcase rules to the two lucky players. They are all so excited just to be on the show, and their enthusiasm and smiles are so contagious. There's just nothing like it.

There's a lot more to the show than just the tapings. Mondays we meet on prizes that I have planned to see if we can improve them. Tuesdays we meet on stage shows that we will tape in a few weeks. We plan the placement of prizes, costumes for models, sets, special effects, tapes, etc. The staff meets every Friday to pitch new prize ideas--and they better be good or we let you know it! We also discuss the week's tapings and what we liked and what we could improve upon. We are constantly trying to make the show better.

The producers, director, and set designer meet regularly, deciding on game refurbishing, new sets, colors, costs, etc. We just had a meeting where we discussed new games for the show.

And believe it or not, we tape six shows a week, prepare six shows for the following week and plan five new shows from scratch--all at the same time.

One of the best things about working on "The Price is Right" is watching people win! I have never gotten jaded to this. My eyes still well up with tears when a single mom or an unemployed bus driver trying to support his family wins $10,000 or a new car. I love the energy in the studio and seeing how perfect strangers root for someone on stage to win a prize!

All of us at "The Price is Right" love what we do, and we are very proud of the show. It has always been a great show, but this season it just has that something extra. The set looks fabulous, the prizes have never been better, Drew is having so much fun. And, with new technology that we are now taking advantage of, everything has been updated without really changing. The addition of Mike Richards, our Executive Producer, and Rich DiPirro, our Director has added so much to the look and feel of the show. We are very lucky to have their creativity and fresh eyes.

If you've never "come on down" to "The Price is Right" you're missing out. But if you can't come and see us in person, the next best thing is to watch it every day. There is no other show like it! Each day when you watch the show, please remember how much we all love it, and that we work very hard hoping that you will love it as much as we do.

I'll be around if you have any questions for me. I love reading what you have to say.

Thanks, Kathy

“The Price is Right” coming at you 24 hours a day… well… almost…

by adam_sandler, Wednesday, December 02, 2009

Many people ask what goes into planning a single episode of “The Price is Right”, and the answer is… a LOT! The genesis of a single episode from the day we start planning it to the day you see it on CBS averages about 13 weeks – pretty amazing, considering that taping the episode itself only takes about 75 minutes. So instead of taking you through the entire process, I’m going to start off with the small chunk that is merely a day in the life of taping two episodes of “The Price is Right”.

(The warehouse crew getting ready to send all the 'fabulous prizes' over to the stage.)

The taping day starts while most of the cast and crew are still sleeping. A set-up crew of five prop men start their shift at 12:01am and begin the task of assembling all the sets that our fabulous prizes will go on. They put together all the background pieces for every prize for both shows that are going to be taped that day. Around 5:30am, our set decorators arrive and take a look at what’s been done, make any changes, and then those guys leave around 11am – before we’ve even rehearsed. True unsung heroes of the show, and we hardly get to see them!

Around 8:30am the heads of the various departments begin to arrive: props, grips, electricians, audio, video, plus our Technical Director. All those folks get started by reviewing the rundowns for the day (the “master plan” for the show – in paper form), briefing their crews as they arrive, pulling props, games, pieces of scenery, and transferring the prizes that were set up early that morning to a location closer to the stage.

At about the same time, our models are getting into hair and make-up, which means our hairdresser, make-up artist, and wardrobe designer are all in long before that setting up their stations. The stage is really coming to life around this time, and that’s about the time that the Prize Department and the Production Staff are coming in. We stop at our offices first, check e-mail, return phone calls, and try to take care of any loose ends that may come up during the day.

At 10:30am, the Producers, Director, Associate Director, Stage Managers, models, and Rich Fields attend a production meeting where we go over the two shows we’re going to tape that day, and make sure everyone is briefed on any special things that might be happening.  After that, it’s time to rehearse – we have one hour to look at everything in the show. Rehearsing the showcases takes up a good portion of that time, as they are different every day – the games we’ve seen before, so we only look at the prizes that will be in them. The hour’s up in a flash, and it’s time for the audience to come in.

(Our morning production meeting - the empty chair on the right is mine!)

The show takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to tape – and it’s the fastest hour and fifteen minutes you’ll ever have! Before you know it, the show is over, the audience is heading out, and we’re headed to lunch. An hour later, we’re back for another rehearsal and another show. The taping day ends around 5:30pm, but for many of us, the day isn’t over yet. Prizes go back in their boxes, and head back to the warehouse. Set decorations get put away, and the crew tidies up and gets prepared for the next day of taping. The production staff heads back to the office to answer all the e-mail and phone calls that came in over the course of the day. Plus, we use that time to plan for the next week of taping. Our warehouse crew is busy putting all the used prizes away, and pulling out all the ones for the next day. It’s not unusual for many people on the show to be here pretty late into the evening.

(Lights are up... time to rehearse!)

So that brings me to the title of this post… and while we’re not here from midnight to midnight, it’s pretty close. But you’ll never hear a complaint – because there’s no better place to be, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

-Adam
